EMS VCS3
Audio clips from Perpetual Motion featuring VCS3
Cassiopeia, 1572:
There is a Prophet 5 on “Cassiopeia” as well as VCS3: a brief solo in the first half of the track (prior to the beginning of this clip), and some pad swells in the second half (which you will hear in the above clip). The Prophet was played by the keyboard player on the session, but all other synth parts are done with VCS3.
When I began working on this track, I decided I wanted to use the VCS3 to do more than the typical sorts of sound effects (although you’ll find those here too), and that I was not going to play any other synthesizers on the track—that I would do it all with the VCS3—including both synth lead parts. These sounds, especially the filter sweeps, additionally make use of a custom filter rack designed by Graham Hinton, which contains four VCF modules of various types and an ADSR/LFO module. There is one more track of VCS3, with a repeating motif which comes in and out throughout the track. This is a more recognisable VCS3 sort of sound.
